UAP - Public art: What's the point ? (Webinar)

UAP - Public art, what is the point ?

"The role of public art in our communities and civic spaces is many and varied. Public art can be the visual reflector of a place, conceptually telling the place story, building statements of pride and ownership whilst offering functional elements such as wayfinding, meeting locations and playful interactions. But does public art ignite our collective imaginations, encourage thought and promote public discourse?
It is claimed that public art can enhance an environment through placemaking, bring people together and can aid economic development. Join UAP’s Chetana Andary – Senior Principal, and Owen Craven – Associate and Curator, as they discuss the role of public art, its impact and benefits on the public realm and interrogate these questions in our webinar: Public Art: What’s the Point?"

Public Art: What's The Point (Webinar) from UAP Company on Vimeo.

Reflections:
This webinar is an invaluable tool for those who are interested in persuing public arts. The speakers present various topics with relevant visual examples and critique of Public artworks from around the work. And discuss the purpose from an artists and potential clients point of view. Much of the information provided could be used in aiding to secure a public work application. Note tho that the audio in this webinar is of poor quality, granually and filled with peaks, which is a shame due to the value of the content, thankfully the imagery is of high quality.

Take aways:

  • Public art should create spaces - it should not just sit in spaces - and can even go as far as defining a space.
  • Public arts is not just an expression of creativity but also freedom and identity both of the artist and client.
  • What is the purpose of public art in a commercial sense:

- it will hummanise a space and make it feel safe and welcoming
- an artwork can help keep or draw people to a space, this can equate to dollars. Particularly in retail spaces as time spent = potential money spent by visitors and genereate potential return visits.
