Presentation - Brainstorm

Students are required to deliver a 10 ten-minute seminar presentation on a topic related to their individual Contemporary Art Project or Artwork including, but not limited to, its concept, theme, medium, or process. The presentation will: introduce the topic clearly; describe its significance to you and the broader community; articulate its contemporary relevance; and examine at least two real-life examples of it using a comparative or contrasting methodology. The seminar will be followed by ten minutes of facilitated engagement with the class. Students are to develop questions and/or activities that engage their peers for that duration. Students are to present their seminar using their own equipment (Laptop, tablet etc.). A projector will be provided for its delivery.

What I am interested in exploring is the capacity for New Media to express abstract concepts
I am also interested in exploring the cross polination of the physical, the digital and the spiritual.

discuss two artists , perhaps a compare and contrast

Artists engagement of new media
Eduardo Kac and Stelarc

so far my research and observation into new media is that most practitioners are exploring the connection between art and science. The artworks themselves are exploring the medium. They generally arent exploring concepts with the medium. With the exeption of say Stelarc. Where as artists such as Eduardo Kac are a good example of the proceeding

New media - exploring abstract concepts
Introduction
How has new media been used
Statement - new media is being used all around us.
Question/argument - can new media be used to express abstract concepts.
I am focusing on Niel harbisson's Eyeborg and Gregory Barsamian's Artifact  who engage with newmedia technologies with vastly different outcomes.
Currently the majority of newmedia artworks are driven by technology, and are often an exploration of the technology.

Neil Harbissons eyeborg :
Why is it important ?
The eyeborg is a classic example of
What is it ?  The eyeborg is a prosthesus that has been attached to his skull, making him the worlds first legally identified cyborg. Neil Harbisson is color blind and what the Eyeborg does is converts color into sound allowing him to hear colors.
Show image and then give a demonstration of how it works
How has it been used ?
he has used if to create portait paintings (show example) and more recently has connected it to a space probe so that he can hear the colors of deep space.

Gregory Barsamian's Artifact:

What is it? Zoetrope
Show image and give a demonstration of what a zoetrope is
Why is it important ?
Technology is taking a backseat to the concept. Infact when I viewed this work in Tasmania last year it took me a while to even think about the technology being used
Why is it important ?

As I found with my week 6 review there is the tempation for artists to be seduced by the technology and explore its depths

What are abstract concepts
Abstract concepts are those for which there is no physical referent; concepts with physical referents are known as concrete concepts. Abstract concepts include freedom, good and evil, love, dreams, success, morality, and chauvinism.
Philosophers are often interested in abstract concepts because they raise issues of ontology and sensory experience. Some philosophers, beginning with Plato, have argued that abstract concepts are the primary subject to be studied in philosophy or metaphysics.[1]
Abstract thinking is a level of thinking about things that is removed from the facts of the “here and now”, and from specific examples of the things or concepts being thought about. Abstract thinkers are able to reflect on events and ideas, and on attributes and relationships separate from the objects that have those attributes or share those relationships.  [2]
